Lying in Causeway Bay

History:  Rapid Transit was once counted amongst the fastest sailing yachts in Hong Kong. Commissioned in 1983 by yachting and scuba-diving enthusiast Charlie S., she was custom-built in Cheoy Lee’s Lantau shipyard on plans drawn by the Portuguese-born, Hampshire-based naval architect Tony Castro. The idea was to make her big, fast, strong and comfortable, which is how they liked their yachts in the early eighties. Having successfully competed in the San Fernando race for several consecutive years, she went on to sail around South-East Asia on a two-year family adventure. After returning to Hong Kong in the mid-nineties, she remained a keen participant in local regattas for many years, until she was eventually acquired by The Boater in March 2018. After a one-year overhaul, new sails and a new rigging, Rapid Transit is sailing the South China Sea again.

Accommodation: Rapid Transit boasts a master cabin with en suite bathroom (with bath tub and bidet),  three cabins with bunk beds, a guest head with shower, a large, well-equipped galley and a comfortable saloon. The well-protected center cockpit is large enough to accomodate 8 guests in the shade. The interiors are all original and pleasantly old-fashioned, from the captain’s Hemingway chair to the galley’s antique gimbal-mounted stove.

Equipment: Designed with an emphasis on comfort, she is fitted with two generously-sized generators (Westerbeke 24 kW), to keep all the ship’s utilities running: air conditioning, hot water,  two 400 liter refrigerators and a 600 liter freezer. An onboard compressor, scuba-diving bottles, snorkelling equipment, fishing rods and fishing tackle provide plenty of onboard and outboard activities. The latest navigation, communication and safety equipment, including AIS and HAM radio, complete the picture, making Rapid Transit the ideal blue-water sailing yacht.

Overnight in Double Haven: Sail out of Causeway Bay or Hebe Haven in the morning and head north-east all the way to Hong Kong’s remotest and most beautiful sailing destination, the fabled Double Haven, for a candle-lit dinner and a moon-light swim. The next day, stop for lunch in Dai Long Wan, Long Ke Wan or the Ninepins islands.  Price: HKD 22,000, all included, for 2 to 8 guests.

From Dawn to Dusk: sail off in the early hours of the morning from Causeway Bay or Pak Sha Wan (Hebe Haven) and explore Hong Kong’s pristine eastern coastline. The more adventurous will prefer the monsoon swells and heady winds of Waglan Island, while swimmers will head for the desert beaches and clear blue waters of the Sai Kung area. Breakfast, lunch and return-journey pre-dinner drinks all included. Return to Causeway Bay by 6pm.  Price: HKD 12,000 (12 guests maximum).

Overnight South China Sea Fishing Adventure: A 24-hour cruise to the South China Sea including overnight sailing, a day of blue water fishing and a feast worthy of Poseidon on the return journey, complete with bouillabaisse, a pick of the day’s catch and plenty of white Burgundy. Departure from the RHKYC in Causeway Bay at 6pm, return before 10pm the next day.  Full board. Fishing tackle provided. Launch price: HKD 4,000 per guest, all inclusive (5 passengers minimum, 8 maximum).

Trek & Sail:  Where Mirs Bay meets the MacLehose trail, explore the less frequented trekking routes of Hong Kong’s remote coasts and islands.  From dawn to dusk, pick-up from Causeway Bay or Hebe Haven, lunch and drinks on the return journey inlcuded. Price: HKD 12,000.

Freediving in Mirs Bay: In collaboration with Freediving Planet, a two-day, overnight charter dedicated to free diving in some of the most beautiful and least polluted waters of Hong Kong.  Overnight stay in Double Haven or in a neighbouring bay, with options to sleep in the cabins, in hammocks or on deck. Full board. Launch price: HKD 2,500 per guest (6 guests minimum, 8 maximum).
